Eczema is a form of dermatitis where the upper layers of the skin become inflamed. The skin becomes dry and has rashes that appear periodically. Eczema is more common in infants and young children, although it can appear at any age.

The areas most prone to eczema include the head, neck, and parts of the limbs such as ankles, knees and elbows. Though there is no complete cure for eczema, it is definitely possible to alleviate the symptoms and keep them under control with various treatment methods.

There are in fact many forms of eczema, although the symptoms of the various types of eczema may be quite similar. Although the exact cause for eczema is not known, some forms are believed to have a hereditary origin, while others, like contact dermatitis, are believed to have an origin related to some trigger factor.

While a cure for has yet to be found, the protein that is responsible for the dry skin produced by eczema has been located. This finding has produced promising progress towards finding a complete eczema treatment. At present, only the symptoms of eczema can be kept in check by various methods, some of which are described below:

It is important to keep the skin moisturized to prevent it from drying and itching. For this reason emollients are advised to be used on the skin right after taking a shower or bath. Some can even be used while taking a bath. These emollients are best used twice a day. Ointments are preferred for their long lasting effect in comparison to creams, however ointments tend to be messier.

An important factor to prevent dry skin and other problems associated with eczema is to avoid the use of harsh soaps and detergents. Unscented soaps made of an oil base are most suitable. It is advisable to perform a patch test while trying out a new soap.

Try to keep the environment clean and free from any dust mites as they can trigger the symptoms of eczema. It is best to switch to hard floor surfaces and avoid the use of carpets that can house dust mites.

Mild to strong steroidal creams are sometimes prescribed depending on the severity of inflammatory symptoms. These creams should not be used on the skin for long periods of time as they can have some adverse effects. In very severe cases, tablets containing steroids may be prescribed for short durations as an alternative to reduce symptoms.

Eczema skin lesions tend to get infected very easily. If any infections set in, antibiotics may be prescribed to counter the infection. Antihistamines can be used to help reduce itching.

Many eczema sufferers have found relief with various natural products that have shown excellent results in some cases. An example of one of these natural products is goat’s milk moisturising cream, which can be used to treat eczema, psoriasis and other skin complaints.
